  • Historical notes

In ancient history, many believe that frankincense was protected by dragons. The ancient Greek writer Herodotus (5th century BC) wrote: “Arabia is the only country that produces incense, myrrh, cassia and cinnamon... the trees that bear the incense are guarded by small winged snakes and of various colors.”

Diodorus Siculus writes, in the second half of the 1st century BC, that “all of Arabia gives off a very delicate perfume; even sailors passing through Arabia can smell the strong smell that bestows health and vigor."

Biblical references aside, frankincense essential oil is known around the world as the king of oils and has many health benefits.

In the anonymous Syriac book of medicine (5th century) frankincense is indicated as useful in the treatment of catarrh, gout, colic and gastrointestinal bleeding. Avicenna’s 11th-century works contain numerous references to the use of frankincense in inflammation and urinary tract infections. In the 17th century Culpepper, a practicing herbalist in the East End of London, used frankincense to heal stomach ulcers and as a topical ointment for bruises. At that time the distillates of the resin, the ‘olibanum oils’, were widely used by barbers, surgeons, pharmacists and alchemists.

In India, frankincense was used on wounds and to treat rheumatism. In China it was a constituent of several skin remedies, including those for infected bruises and sores, and thus a treatment for leprosy.

Today, frankincense is also extensively used as a component of perfumes and toiletries.
